Acupuncture vs. Dry Needling

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is used to help treat muscular pain or stimulate trigger points. Like Acupuncture, dry needling uses thin stainless steel needles to target areas of the body.  However, unlike acupuncture, it uses needles without any fluid hence the term "dry". Studies have shown that there is not much difference between dry needling and deep stretching on the affected area.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and is used to treat a varied range of conditions for therapeutic and preventative purposes by placing needles in certain precise areas of the body to allow your Chi to flow without blockages, including:

  • Lower back pain

  • Knee pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Neck pain

  • Depression

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Menstrual Pain

You have to be qualified and have a license to perform Acupuncture; this is not the case with Dry Needling.

Risks

With dry needling, mild side effects are very common whereas with acupuncture it is very rare. Both, however, have the following effects shortly after the session as is to be expected:

  • Bruising around the area

  • Soreness in the area where the needles were

  • Red marks
